Bohemian Rhapsody
in Blue

Freddie Mercury was in search for ‘Somebody to Love’; George and Ira Gershwin for ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’. George and Ira hit the dance floor (‘I Got Rhythm’); Queen never left it (‘Don’t Stop Me Now’). From the very first moments of Bohemian Rhapsody in Blue, as the frenetic and rhythmic opening of Porgy and Bess is layered with ‘We Will Rock You’, the music of Queen and Gershwin is juxtaposed and combined in ways that elevate the two in tandem to soaring new heights.

Both Gershwin and Queen were innovative in their challenging of traditions and thrilling combination of musical styles: Queen fusing classical, opera and vaudeville with rock and roll, and Gershwin melding classical with jazz, musical theater and popular song. The finale of the production, a synthesis of two of the most beloved, ubiquitous compositions in the history of music- Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’- follows in this tradition. It combines the pieces themselves, aligning and synthesizing their many kaleidoscopic musical sections, to create a cohesive new whole that is at once Gershwin and Queen, and leaves us marveling at the genius of the original compositions.
